We, as Midrand Karate Academy, were established in Midrand in November of 2020 just after the previous Sensei immigrated to Ireland with his family. Due to many constraints caused by Covid-19 we were not permitted to use the facilities of the previous Sensei, so we found a small classroom at the back of a school. With a handful of students we started teaching traditional Goju Ryu Karate.
Four months after starting at the school we moved into an old squash court, that was previously a Yoga studio. After a good clean, fresh coat of paint and a couple of murals, we created a home for all the students.
We have now been in our new home since February 2021.

Sergio started his karate career at the young age of 39. After promising his son that he would join if he made it to the senior class, which he did! Once Sergio achieved his final Brown Belt he decided to start teaching in order to improve his karate. Since then he hasn't stopped, firstly in the dojo where he trains to eventually starting his own dojo in April of 2019. In the September of 2020 the style head for Goshukan South Africa asked him to take over from the Sensei who was leaving for Ireland. Sergio Sensei received his Sho Dan (1st Dan) in December 2016, his Nidan (2nd Dan) in December 2018 and finally his San Dan (3rd Dan) in December 2021.

Owais joined the Midrand Karate Academy at the age of 8. Owais has ADHD and was recommended by an occupational therapist to do karate, which helped him significantly with his focus, confidence, and also with making friends. Owais received his final brown belt in 2020. In September 2020 his Sensei at the time had to immigrate to Ireland. This is when Sergio Sensei stepped in to take care of Midrand Karate Academy. In November 2022 he received his Sho Dan (1st Dan). In 2022 Owais told Sergio Sensei that he had a passion for teaching, so Sergio Sensei invited him to teach the younger classes.
